Participant Rules

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to write, design, rehearse and perform a short play in as little as 7 days. The following rules apply to each performance troupe:

  1. Times:
    • Artist’s Agreement for the performance entry, along with the entry fee for troupe registration must be submitted by Friday, September 15, 2017 at 7pm CT.
    • The 711 Theatre Project and 711 Select (‘711’) will occur between Friday, September 15, 2017 at 7 pm and Sunday, September 24, 2017 at 11:59 pm, CT.
    • Troupes must submit one Adobe Acrobat Document (pdf) of their script to 711 by Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at 6pm CT. After script submission, Troupes are not allowed to make any changes to their script.
    • Only Troupes that meet all deadlines will be eligible for prizes in the competition. However, all participating Troupes will be allowed to perform.
  2. In the week prior to the opening night of the 711 Theatre Project, all creativity will take place, including but not limited to:
    • Playwriting
    • Costume design
    • Light/Sound design
    • Rehearsing
  3. The only work to begin prior to your “Kick-off” event is:
    • recruiting production team
    • auditioning and securing actors
  4. Each Troupe must have a representative at the “Kick-off”. Then:
    • Each troupe will be introduced to the set they will be performing on and may be given a set diagram.
    • Each troupe will choose the genre of its play at random.
    • All troupes receive the same required elements that must appear in the play scheduled in their performance group.
    • The required prop and character must be on-stage in the play for that day’s performances.
    • The required line may be spoken, sung and/or written live on stage. It may be in any language, if unclear, there must be a translation. Check with 711 committee prior to tech rehearsal if you are in doubt.
  5. To qualify as a 711 Theatre Project Play, it must adhere to the genre drawn for that troupe, must be comprised of no less than 2 actors appearing on stage, and must contain all required elements.
  6. All cast and crew must be volunteers.
  7. The finished play must be a minimum of 7 minutes in duration and a maximum of 11 minutes in duration.
    • Each play will be timed during performance.
    • Troupes will be given a visual cue that they have reached 7 minutes.
    • Troupes will be given a visual warning at 1 minute remaining.
    • Plays that have not completed at the 11-minute mark will be stopped immediately.
    • Troupes will have 1 minute prior to their performance to set the stage for their play. After their performance, Troupes have 1 minute to clear the set of actors and reset the stage to neutral. These times will not be counted toward their required times.
  8. Pre-recorded music, video and sound cues are allowed, but you must have rights to use them.
  9. Each Troupe must submit a Statement of Certification certifying adherence to all rules, along with the Troupe Cast & Crew List and one Adobe Acrobat Document (pdf) of their script.
  10. Each Troupe must secure liability and performance release forms for every cast and crew as well as any music/sound releases, which must be turned in to the 711 before the Troupe is allowed initial access to the Theatre for any rehearsals (tech or dress) or performances.
  11. Content of the play is at the discretion of the Troupes. 711 reserves the right not to allow any play to be performed that 711 considers to be overly mature, pornographic, or extremely violent. Troupes should keep in mind that the 711 is general audience seating – patrons will be ages 8 to 80+, so the 711 Theatre Project recommends aiming for no higher than PG-13 content.
  12. To be certified as a 711 Theatre Project Play, each troupe’s play must follow all rules herein. 711 reserves the right to allow only certified 711 Theatre Project plays to be performed.
  13. All certified 711 Theatre Project Plays are eligible to compete for all prizes and awards of 711.
  14. 711 may amend these rules at any time and shall use good faith efforts to post any changes to the rules on and emailed to participating Troupes as soon as practical.
